March is both National Nutrition Month and National Frozen Food Month. Here’s to us, people of infinite contradiction!
Though I enjoy bringing to light such absurd banalities, this month’s themes are not related to any official decree for March. Hope to see you ’round the mic!
Two Front Parlor storytelling events, and one slam during a regional storytelling conference:
March 12, 2012
7:30 – 9:30 pm at the Ale House
(680 River Street)
FLASH PROMPT: Tell a story of a nickname. (Not necessarily yours.)
*Please note the change to Monday for March.
What’s in a name? (No roses, please.)
Notorious nicknames? Fascinating etymologies? Tell a story of your name, naming someone else, a name-related mishap, or out your dreaded childhood nickname.
Arrive early to ensure a seat at a table if you’re ordering dinner. Arrive early to ensure a seat, period.
March 19, 2012
7:00- 9:00 pm at the Olde English Pub
(683 Broadway, Quackenbush Sq.)
THEME: “Sticks and Stones”
FLASH PROMPT: TBP on 3/18
Sticks and stones? …As in the hurt-inducing alternative to name-calling (broken bones), or perhaps a time that name-calling resulted in physical hurt. Or perhaps one of the many “Sticks and Stones” titled albums. Or perhaps you are a natural builder. Or listening to “Sticky Fingers” far from anywhere. Limitless possibilities; interpret the theme as you see fit.
Same rules. (See previous posts.)
Sharing the Fire: Northeast Storytelling Conference

People tell the most incredible true life stories at a slam – a contest of words by known and undiscovered talent. The theme is “E-Erie Nights”. Story slammers will sign up on the night to tell their personal life experiences in a four-minute story on the theme. Names will be drawn at random from a box. There will be a team of five judges. Listeners will be engaged in story improv games and other interactive entertainment while judges tabulate.
About the theme “E-Erie Nights”:
Have you ever had a moment you shudder to think about? Haunting coincidences? Déjà vu? Have you ever been on the Erie Canal late at night?
Share your true personal four minute story in a spirit of fun and competition and you could win some great prizes. First prize is a two night stay at the Sovereign Hotel including a fifty dollar gift certificate and seats for two to sail on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, America’s flagship environmental organization.
